Robbie L. Storm was born into a family of art, architecture, design and function. There was no escaping the attraction. Her uncle Alan Mirken and Bob Abrams were partners at Abbeville Press (with a division publishing Fine Art Books). Mr. Abrams introduced Robbie to his personal curator, Judith Dupré, author of best-selling books on art, design and architecture, and a nationally featured speaker. She became Robbie’s mentor. Ms. Storm is also a “Lightolier grand-daughter” – her aunt Bobby was named for Bernard Blitzer, founder of Lightolier – the highly influential company of advanced lighting designs and manufacture. As a child, art became “up close and personal” when she traveled with her mother (a jury art member) to artists’ studios, selecting the most important art for shows, including Andy Warhol’s “Tomato Soup” at The Factory, as part of a large exhibit. Robbie was at museums and shows 3 of every 4 weekends. From age 2½ she was occasionally allowed to pallet-knife paint an inch on one of her mother’s canvases. “The smell of the oil paints, the linseed oil.” She was sensitized to seeing errors early on and able to recognize impact. “I knew from a very young age, I was going to only be on the paint side of the canvas. I had to have the art. Big art. Meaningful art. And especially art that hadn’t been done.” Paintings from two of her series are owned by one of the world’s most prestigious collectors.
Headlines, tributes, commentaries on society, emotions,
commitment to everything creative.
"All the mid century architects that designed furniture and fabric.
Why did George Nelson cut the wood to insert his handles instead of surface mounting them. Why were the Maharam fabric designs so repetitively hypnotic - I used to hide behind the curtains. How was Noguchi so good at math. And everything was bigger than I was.
My paintings have to be larger than I am.
My paintings have to have impact. Boom!"
